Why does time machine backup take so long

Feather has a nice chart in the description which tells which of their products is compatible with which Mac. Another way to check the upgradeability of the Mac is crucial. The good thing about upgrading primary storage and improving its read performance is that Time Machine is not the only thing that benefits from the upgrade.

Literally, every app runs faster possibly 10x faster now. However, when it comes to the backup process, the biggest bang for the buck is choosing the right external hard drive.

For instance, I tested the difference in performance between backing up on an external hard drive and on a thumb drive. Yes, you can. Flash drives work exactly the same way as external hard drives. The difference is usually the speed: flash drives are usually way slower sometimes 10xx slower.

As expected in my experiment, the flash drive performed very poorly. Since my flash drive was limited to 32GB, I backed up a brand new MacBook without any applications installed. The backup size was around 20GB. If you need recommendations for the best external devices for Time Machine, you can find them below. But even if you decide to go with drives other than I recommend, please go with well-known brands. Note: these are not real names, I just made them up, but you get the point.

I am just amazed at how unknown brands get thousands of 5-star reviews on Amazon, and I try to stay away from those. Remember, losing a backup may be much more costly than investing in a more expensive but reliable brand. Hi, I am Al. I've been working with computers for more than 20 years and I am passionate about Apple products.

You can reach me at [email protected]. Although you may not think so, you do have files photos, documents you don't want to lose on your Mac and apps you don't want to reinstall. Backup programs, such as Time Machine, save the While I was doing different experiments on my MacBook, I always knew that I can restore the contents of my MacBook to the working state because I have made backups with the Time Machine. How does How long it takes to do a Time Machine backup depends on the following factors: The number of files and their size on the primary storage The priority of the backup process The speed of the primary storage drive The speed of the backup drive The Number of Files and Their Size on the Primary Storage How long does time machine take to backup gb?

Unfortunately, the background nature of the Time Machine does not work in situations like this. I found two ways to change the Time Machine process priority. Remove throttling for low priority processes Change the priority of the backup task Remove throttling for low priority processes As we already know, the Time Machine process, by default, is a low priority process. The steps are the following: 1. Start Terminal app 2.

Since an antivirus can use your external hard drive for routine checkups, it might interfere with the Time Machine backup. This means another solution you can try is excluding the external drive volume from your antivirus scans after you scan the drive for malware though. Another reason for Time Machine issues can be that your macOS is not up to date. Should there be any updates available, go ahead and install them before attempting to create another Time Machine backup.

If you have previously successfully created a Time Machine backup on the external disk you are using, but have issues now, recent software installs might be interfering with the backup. Other apps trying to use your external drive as Time Machine is creating a backup could result in a conflict, so make sure no apps are using the drive. All in all, you Time Machine should not be preparing the backup for hours, so hopefully one of the above solutions can help you.

One option is Get Backup Pro. The app allows you to select individual items you want to backup, sync folders, and schedule backups.

You can backup your info both on your Macintosh HD and external drives. And if you need a sync across your devices, ChronoSync is the solution for you. Set up the folders you need syncing and hit the large arrow icon right in the middle of your sync setup:. Sync between Macs, use InterConneX to sync with iOS devices, back up to external storage units or file servers, do remote backups, and more with this handy app. These apps are easy to set up and use, so if you find their interfaces more intuitive for your preference, you can give them a shot.

Before you get too frustrated with your Apple device stuck on the step of Time Machine preparing backup, follow the below tips to avoid backup issues. Start by sizing up the backup you are about to make.

This will also help estimate how much time Time Machine Preparing backup process might take. This is the amount of data your Mac will have to copy to the external drive.

Another tip to avoid backup issues is reducing the size of your backup. This does not mean deleting files from your laptop or moving them to the cloud. Are you backing up via WiFi? That can slow down backups. Make sure you are connected to a fast 5ghz network. Format or check the hard drive you are backing up to.

Open up disk utility and run a check on your hard drive. Maybe the drive is getting bad, or a repartition and a reformat could help. If you have cancelled or unexpectedly interrupted the previous backup time machine may take a longer time when making a new backup again. Virtualization apps like Vmware Fusion or Parallels can often write data to your hard drive and this may keep time machine going all the time. Consider excluding virtual machines from your backup. I have a new, MacBook Pro with 2.

The Macbook is directly attached to a LaCie 4big Quadra. Before this fix, it was sooooooo slow to have Time Machine back anything up. I often found myself killing the backup job so I could grab my Macbook and head off to a meeting.

What use to take hours, now takes minutes! Thank you so very much for sharing this! Grrrreat, thanks! Kicked the process from twelve to less than two hours.

Is this a solution you can use for, for instance, any update process? Keep up the good work, kind regards from The Netherlands. Leon: Glad it worked!

It may be possible to use this command for other background services as well. For example updating icloud photo libraries? I am just guessing here tho. Thank you for sharing the site, it helps. Do you have any more advice for me? Did nothing for me where as the original sudo sysctl debug.

And that makes sense: if the back up is obeying some throttle flag then changing the priority makes no difference. Personally, I do first backups when I am not going to be using my computer eg overnight.

Its the perfect time for the throttle. I googled and found this thread and its cruising along now.. Do you have to restart computer or type in a command into terminal to shut this setting off after your backup is complete?! Even after running command line in terminal, I was having same issue as Raphael granite. I then restarted the backup as suggested by bjokib.

That made all the difference in the world. Backup went from 16 hrs to about 10 minutes!!! After half an hour, I have backed up mb out of gb… Sigh.

This is not working for me. Have a new MacBook Air I got about 6 months ago. Original backup to the old WD went quickly6 months ago. Even with making the terminal command change recommended above, my backup with the new WD drive is at mb after nearly 10 minutes and estimated time to complete is a full day for GB internal drive!. Really annoying that the newer drive is actually slower. I can cut and paste a file directly and it takes about 30 seconds to transfer 1 GB.

After 80 minutes backing up with Time Machine, even after using the throttle command above, it had transferred 9 GB. I just quit it. That sounds really strange… I have nothing else to suggest terminal wise. If you can copy the file manually in good speed its obviously nothing wrong with the hardware.
