Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children—revised. New York: Psychological Corporation; The two hemispheres in your brain are connected by a thick bundle of nerve fibres called the corpus callosum that ensures both sides of the brain can communicate and send signals to each other. A combination of sensory, motor and cognitive information is constantly being transferred between hemispheres via this neural highway.
There are approximately million axons nerve fibres in an average corpus callosum. It is located in the white matter of the cerebrum and is around 10cm long at the midline. This neural bridge is the largest white matter structure in the brain and only evolved in placental mammals.
Surgical severing of the corpus callosum is a last-resort method for untreatable epilepsy, to stop seizures spreading across the brain. In mild cases, however, the disorder can go undetected for some years. Research about callosal disorders is ongoing. But there are some common features of agenesis of the corpus callosum, although they vary from person to person. They can be broken down into four categories :. If the corpus callosum has not grown properly during fetal development, then it never will.
There is no direct treatment for agenesis of the corpus callosum. Symptoms will be identified and potentially treated, as they occur. Treatment is available for many of the medical conditions associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum, such as seizures. Therapy and counseling can also help to improve language and social skills. A doctor will be able to outline all of the treatment options available in individual cases.
Neuroscientists recently studied that 'Aha! It is linked to reward centers and our evolutionary…. A new study shows that the brain's immune cells retain a memory of previous inflammation, which causes them to react differently to toxic brain….
Scientists have found a 'switch' that controls the fight-or-flight response in the brains of mice. The findings are relevant to humans living with…. New research examines what goes on in the brain when people perform a task in front of an audience versus when they are not being watched. For many years, scientists have thought that brain cells in the hippocampus stop generating as we get older. Thus, according to Sperry and Gazzaniga, because language centers are located in the left side of the brain, when an image is presented to the left eye of a split-brain patient, the patient's language areas are not privy to the visual information.
The information travels to the right hemisphere but does not cross back over to the left due to the severed corpus callosum. So, the ability to place a name to the object is limited. These experiments helped to demonstrate the importance of the left hemisphere in language processing as well as the importance of the corpus callosum in bridging the two cerebral hemispheres.
However, they also demonstrated the versatility and resiliency of the brain, as in most split-brain patients other tracts like the anterior commissure still carry enough information between the cerebral hemispheres to allow overall functionality to be somewhat normal.
