You can choose from several ways of looking at the data:. AirData assists a wide range of people, from the concerned citizen who wants to know how many unhealthy air quality days there were in his county last year to air quality analysts in the regulatory, academic, and health research communities who need raw data.
AirData lets you display and download monitored hourly, daily, and annual concentration data, AQI data, and speciated particle pollution data. This part of the website has two query tools one for raw data and one for daily data and a page of pre-pulled data files. This part of the website provides a way to generate customized reports based on parameters you select. The About Air Data Reports page explains exactly what is in each report, including individual column descriptions.
These reports are technical in nature and are intended to assist monitoring agencies. Use the Interactive Map of Air Quality Monitors to see where air quality monitors are located, get information about the monitor, and download data from the monitor. You can select which monitoring networks to display on the map. There are also layers for nonattainment areas, Tribal areas, and Federal Class 1 areas national parks and wilderness areas. Monitoring Data - Ambient outdoor concentrations of pollutants are measured at more than monitoring stations owned and operated mainly by state environmental agencies.
AirData retrieves data from AQS. Emissions Data - EPA keeps track of the amount of pollution that comes from a variety of sources such as vehicles, power plants, and industries. The emissions data reported to EPA by state environmental agencies can be an actual reading taken at a source or an estimate made using a mathematical calculation.
AirData does not contain emissions data at this time. Emissions data can be obtained from the Air Emissions Inventories website. Criteria Air Pollutants EPA sets national air quality standards for six common pollutants, also called criteria pollutants , to protect public health. Monitoring sites report data to EPA for these six criteria air pollutants:. If the AQI reading is in the range of 16 to 31, the air quality is in the good category.
If the AQI reading is in the range of 32 to 49, the air quality is in the moderate category, and there may be some adverse effects for very sensitive people. If the AQI reading is in the range of 50 to 99, the air quality is in the poor category, and may have adverse effects for sensitive members of human and animal populations, and may cause significant damage to vegetation and property. Instruments on the ground and satellites orbiting Earth collect information about what is in our air.
These particles include smoke particles from wildfires; airborne dust during dust and sand storms; urban and industrial pollution; and ash from erupting volcanoes. Ground level ozone can also be measured by the JPSS series of satellites.
GOES-R Series satellites can provide particle pollution measurements approximately every five minutes during the day. JPSS satellites can provide a higher resolution measurement of aerosols over the entire planet once a day. JPSS can also observe the movement of aerosols from one side of the planet to the other. JPSS can also measure carbon monoxide which is associated with poor air quality resulting from wildfires. The image mosaic on the left of the slider bar shows visible smoke from wildfires on the West Coast of the blowing eastward across the United States.
